Wiskunde en wiskundigen
Niet iedereen is even positief over wiskunde. Om enkele voorbeelden aan
te halen:
The good Christian should beware of
mathematicians and all those who make empty prophecies. The danger
already exists that mathematicians have made a covenant with the devil
to darken the spirit and confine man in the bonds of Hell.
Dit werd gezegd door Augustinus (354-430), toch niet de
minste. We kunnen ons een beetje geruststellen met het idee de hier
wiskundigen gelijkgesteld worden met toekomstvoorspellende astrologen.
Van een ander kaliber is D'Alembert
(1717-1783):
The mathematician may be compared to
a designer of garments, who is
utterly oblivious of the creatures whom his garments may fit. To be
sure, his art originated in the necessity for clothing such creatures,
but this was long ago; to this day a shape will occasionally appear
which will fit into the garment as if the
garment had been made for it. Then there is no end of surprise and
delight.
Dit laat zien hoe nuttig wiskunde is, zelfs in de ogen van
iemand naar wie een wiskundige techniek is genoemd. Als je wilt weten
wat een wiskundige is, kun je te rade gaan bij Kelvin:
Once when lecturing in class he [Lord
Kelvin] used the word'mathematician' and then interrupting himself
asked his class: 'Do you know what a mathematician is?' Stepping to his
blackboard he wrote upon it:
integral from - infinity to +
infinity of exp(-x^2)dx = sqrt(pi). Then putting his finger on
what he had written, he turned to his class and said,'a mathematician
is one to whom *that* is as obvious as that twice two makes four is to
you.'"
Wie voelt zich aangesproken?
Zulke moeilijke dingen zul je hier niet aantreffen. Mijn missie is om
wiskunde toe te passen; niet alleen de motivatie komt uit de praktijk,
maar vaak willen we de resultaten ook weer terug vertalen naar de
praktijk. Ook dat is een uitdaging...
